Chosen City Church Sermons
Walking In The Newness Of Life | Romans 6:4-6 | Pastor Walter Bowers Sr.
Walking in newness of life means experiencing a complete transformation where old things pass away and all things become new through Christ. The baptismal experience represents more than just an event—it symbolizes death to our old self and resurrection into a new way of living.
• Becoming a new creature in Christ means developing a different "stride" or way of moving through life
• Our number one priority must be pleasing God and not letting anything take our focus off Him
• True transformation is evidenced not by church buildings or denominational names, but by what's inside a person's heart
• The ministry of reconciliation requires putting away former corrupt conversations and being renewed in spirit
• Evidence of spiritual rebirth is shown through love—without love, all spiritual gifts and religious activities amount to nothing
• Growing in Christ means putting away childish things and not letting "little things" upset us
• The greatest example of love is Christ laying down His life for us
Stay in the service of the Lord. The world didn't give this joy, and the world can't take it away.

Amen.
Speaker 2:Amen.
Speaker 1:Without the Holy Spirit, there is no life. We bless God for the presence of his Holy Spirit. Let us pray, oh great God. Father, our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ, I come humbly before your throne of grace and mercy and ask that you would guide me with your Holy Spirit. Speak, father, through me. Allow that which you give to go forth plainly. Let the word be received. Let, father, application be made and help us to be better doers. Save according to your divine will, restore backsliders.
Speaker 2:You have all glory, all honor and all praise.
Speaker 1:It is in your son's name, jesus the Christ, that I pray, amen.
Speaker 2:Amen.
Speaker 1:Amen To Pastor Walter Bowers Jr, to fellow clergy, to the officers here, to all of my brothers and sisters in Christ, to everybody. Under the sound of this servant's voice, I greet you in the name of Jesus. In the book of Romans, chapter 6, romans, chapter 6, beginning with verse number 4, these verses, these words, are found Therefore, we are buried with him by baptism into death that, like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life, for if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection, knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. The subject today is walking in newness of life. Walking in newness of life. You may be seated, amen, amen. You may be seated, amen, amen. We bless God for his holy word. There is power in the word of God. Never forget that. That always know that the word is able to keep us. The strength that we need is provided by God's holy word.
Speaker 1:The Bible teaches us that when we pull off the old man, that something happens. We find, when we give our lives to Christ, that we really have just started to live. Have just started to live. You ever met anybody who thought that they were really living a great life? Perhaps they had just about everything they could imagine they wanted, but then one day they met the man Jesus and discovered that life was really just beginning. We find that the apostle Paul said if any man be in Christ, he is what he is a new creature. Old things are passed away. Behold all things become new. 2 Corinthians 5 and 17. Before anybody allows the devil to come in and interrupt their focus by listening to him whispering that nobody is perfect and that we all have flaws.
Speaker 1:I wouldn't argue with that. But what I would add is that as new creatures in Christ, sure we may have been accustomed to walking A certain way. You know how you can have a particular stride and it just comes naturally. You develop the stride and you have gotten so conditioned that that's all you know. So I won't argue that no man is perfect, no woman is perfect. I won't argue with that. However, when we are in Christ, we are new creatures.
Speaker 1:And I would add, per the Apostle Paul true, I have not attained yet, but this one thing I do. I may have had an old stride, we remember how that old stride has been and how it is, but there's something about meeting Christ, paul said, I know this that I'm forgetting. Every day we have a new stride, a new walk, and that old way of walking, that old way of getting along, just doesn't seem to do it like it used to. I'm talking about when you have met Jesus. Now, if you are doing the same old walk and you are happy with it, I would just say have a talk with the master and say Lord, you said in your word that if I be in Christ, that I'm a new creature but I'm still loving the same thing. It's not God who's messing up, it's the individual. And so Paul said I'm leaving those things, I'm forgetting those things because I'm pressing toward the mark. Mark, let me tell you something this world is not our home. Do you hear me? I don't care what we look like, I don't care how fine we might appear to be. Every day we're getting a little bit closer to leaving here one way or another. Oh yeah, we got to leave. Can I get a witness? The Bible tells us that it is appointed unto man to do what Once? To die. And after that we got to leave, and so I believe that we ought to start sending up timber every day of our lives. Old things are passed away. Now we just baptized a bunch of folk. Isn't that right? We don't want it to be, my brothers and sisters, where baptism is no more than an event. Are you praying with me when we come and we look, we take our video? That's all right, but we need to understand that there is more to going down in the water than observing going down and coming up wet. No, it's more than that. If any man be in Christ, it's more than that. If any man be in Christ. He is a new creature.
Speaker 1:The reason we have so much stuff. You got all kind of churches today, all kind of names on churches. One fellow was trying to argue with me at a barbershop one time. Sometimes you got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them. Sometimes you just hear stuff and you let it go, fellow telling me I'm on the wrong road because the name on our church building wasn't the same as the name on his building.
Speaker 1:Now, my brothers and sisters, christ didn't come and say that if you have this particular name on a church building, that that's going to save you. Now, it's not what's on the building that saved you, it's what's on the inside. You've got to be bone again. So the problem today is we got a lot of churches popping up everywhere, but what's on the inside of the building? Crowds everywhere. But don't you know that many buildings are filled with people who have nothing but dead bones on the inside? You've got to be born again, ain't? No, maybe you must be. You've got to be born again.
Speaker 1:So we talk about walking in newness of life. Our number one priority is to please God. And let me throw this in Don't let anything take your focus off of God. We are living in trying times and I keep telling people everywhere I go God didn't give you the spirit of fear, you don't have to worry about anything. God is still on the throne. God is always in charge. God was in charge when the children of Israel were in abundance in Egypt. God put them there. Why do you think he put them there? Because he needed to get their attention.
Speaker 1:When things are happening today, why do you think they're happening? God is trying to tell the church something. If my people who are called by my name would hear my armor themselves and pray, then they will hear from heaven. We've got to put God first. It's not a black thing, it's not a white thing. The Bible said in the last days there will be a great falling away All colors.
Speaker 1:We're talking about folk who used to be a part of the church but rather than loving Christ like they used to, they got a different type of love and that's why, when you look around, it seems strange. We need to get back to our first love. We've got to hold up the name of Jesus Christ. There is healing, there is power, there is deliverance. In the name of Jesus Christ, can I get a witness. Hold up the name of Jesus. Let me tell you one more thing At the name of Jesus, at the name of Jesus, let me tell you one more thing At the name of Jesus, at the name of Jesus, every, every knee I don't care who they call themselves, every knee, god has a way of breaking down the biggest and tallest. Every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess that he is Lord. And I'm a witness. Jesus is Lord of all of the earth. Give the Lord a hand clap. Give the Lord a hand clap, the Lord a hand clap. We got to walk in newness of life. Without Jesus, there would be no newness of life. Can you do this? Turn your Bibles quickly, if you would.
Speaker 1:2 Corinthians, chapter 5 and verse number 18. And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself by whom? By Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation. We're talking about newness of life, to wit that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation. We ought to bless the name Of the Lord.
Speaker 1:Paul Told the Ephesians To put off former Conversation Involving the old man, because that former conversation Is corrupt According to Deceitful lust. He also told them to be renewed in the spirit of their mind. There is power in the word of God. We ought to let our minds be renewed in the spirit of God. He told them to put on the new man which, after God, is created in righteousness and holiness. He told them to walk in newness of life. Are we walking in newness of life? Ephesians 4, amen and 25.
Speaker 1:Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. There ought to be some unity in the church. Oh yeah, one lord, one faith, one baptism. Ye angry and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Did you know that there are folk in the church said they've been born again, but can't speak to one another? That seems to be kind of childlike to me. We find here that we've got to put on the new man. Be angry, but don't sin. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath.
Speaker 1:The Bible teaches us that wise men differ, but only fools fall out. We need my brothers and sisters to know how to hold conversations where we don't get at odds with one another. We need to know that people will have different points of view, but it's not what they say or what they say. It's what God says in his holy word. Yeah, neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole we're talking about noodles of life, for there are thieves in the church Let him that stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with what His hands, the thing which is good that he may have to give to him a man that need it Went on to say let no communication that is corrupt proceed out of your mouth. Yeah, but that which is good to the use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Speaker 1:Yeah, the apostle went on to say grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice, and be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven you. Jesus has taught that if we don't forgive one another, neither will the Lord forgive us. If we're not merciful to one another, neither will the Lord be merciful unto us If our lives are always seemingly upside down. We ought to pause and see how we're treating other folk. We're praying, saying Lord, have mercy on me, but we're trying to take out a brother or a sister. If we want to see a change in our lives, then we need to go to God and say, lord, it's me standing in the need of prayer. Stop putting your finger at everybody else. Bow down and say, lord, it's me standing in the need of prayer.
Speaker 1:You know folk are quick to blame somebody else, blaming this man, blaming that woman. But a whole lot of times it's our attitude, it's our approach. We've got to learn how to humble ourselves and confess our sins before the Lord. We've got to walk in newness of life. We must be willing to be different. Yeah, we are new creatures in Christ. What shall we say? Romans 6 and 1. Shall we continue in sin? That grace may abound, god forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein?
Speaker 1:If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Yeah, if you happen to fall, I declare that when you become a new creature, you just don't feel the same. Yeah, you'll find that until you go to God and get it right, you'll wrestle all night long Talking about when you are a new creature in Christ. That old man could do what he wanted to do and lay down and sleep good at night. But when you give it over to Jesus, when you fall along the way, I declare something going to bother you. You're going to toss and turn all night long. You won't be able to rest until you tell God about it. You won't be able to rest until you say, father, I stretch my hand to you, father, I'm standing and I need you to come and see about me. I declare when you are a new creature in Christ, there is something different about your attitude.
Speaker 1:Let us, my brothers and sisters, hear the word of the Lord. Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death. Old folks say, hey, I done died one time, but I'm not gonna die anymore. Meaning that they died to death, but I'm not going to die anymore. Meaning that they died the death to sin. They gave it over to the Lord. You see, you can die one time and that be done. Or you can die a second time and that's when you die that spiritual death. But you say I gave it over to the master, I then gave my life to the mighty hands of God. We have been baptized into his death and we are buried with him by baptism into death that, like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father.
Speaker 1:Even so, we also should walk in newness of life. I pray that we're walking a new walk, for if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall also be in his likeness, in the likeness of his resurrection. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin, let us put our hearts in the right place, for in that he died, he died unto sin once, but in that he liveth. He liveth unto God. Likewise, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead, indeed, unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Somebody say there's power. In the name of the Lord, put your heart, amen, in the right place. We got to find ourselves continuing to press toward the right place. We got to find ourselves Continuing to press Toward the high calling, the high calling Of Jesus Christ, and we must learn To keep our feet On the ground. I'm getting ready to leave you, amen. I'm getting ready to go on home.
Speaker 1:Find here that as we walk in newness of life, there ought to be some evidence about us. Can anyone hear this? Yeah, it's not how we shout, it's not how we pray, it's not how we look on the outside, but the Bible tells us that we know that we have passed from death unto life Because we love the brethren. That means we can say what we want to with our mouths, but if we don't have any love in our hearts, we haven't been born again. Can it end this? It's like somebody trying to say that a man can live when the doctor done took his heart out. Yeah, if you don't have a heart in you, I declare you're not living. You find here that the only way we can live is to have the love of God on the inside, getting ready to leave you.
Speaker 1:Though I speak the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. God, I have love, though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and understand and have all knowledge, though I can have all faith so that I can remove mountains, and have not charity. The Bible says I am nothing, and though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffered long and charity is kind. Charity immeasurably not, and charity wanted not itself. The Bible says charity is not puffed up, does not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thanketh no evil, rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth.
Speaker 1:Can I get a witness? Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth. But whether there be prophecies, they shall fail. Whether there be tongues, they shall cease. Whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. We know in part and we prophesy in part, but when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
Speaker 1:When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But when I became a man I put away childish things that tell me that somewhere on this journey we've got to grow up. Tell me that somewhere on this journey we've got to stop playing schoolyard games. They've got to tell me that things that bothered you yesterday ought not be bothering you today, not be bothering you today. I'll never forget. When I was at a commencement exercise in my high school years, I heard the speaker say she said little things bother. Little people Reminded me that we got to stop letting little things set us down and turn us around. We've got to look past little things. We've got to become men, got to walk as women. We've got to grow up. We've got to learn how to speak up, but yet speak at the right time. We've got to learn how to bless God. We've got to learn how to stay in our place.
Speaker 1:Can I know in part, but then shall I know, even as also I am known Now about his faith, hope and charity, these three, but the greatest of these is charity, as I get ready to leave you. Nothing greater than charity, In other words, nothing greater than love. No love is greater than this that a man will lay down in life for a friend. I'm talking about real love, not when you're loving me, when the crowd is around and stabbing me behind my back, not that kind of love. I'm talking about love that will be with you when the odds are against you, when people have walked away and left you.
Speaker 1:I'm talking about love, for God looked beyond our faults and he saw every one of our needs. We were sinking deep in sin Somebody know what I'm talking about, drowning in sin but God looked beyond our fault and saw our needs. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever, that whosoever not a big shot, not a little shot, but whosoever I'm a whosoever, I'm a whosoever Been talked about, been talked about. But God, god, look beyond my fault. I'm talking about love. I'm talking about God's love. He died Talking about Jesus. He died on that old, ragged cross. Yes, he did Put him in a bar or two, but early. Do you know the story? Early, early. He arose with all power, all power, love, love.
Speaker 2:he lived he lived.
Speaker 1:I'm gonna press on, I'm gonna press on, I'm gonna run on.
Speaker 2:I'm gonna run on. I'm glad I love him. I love the Lord he heard my cry.
Speaker 1:Somebody said Pity every groan. Long as I live, long as I live and trouble rise, I'm gonna hasten, I'm gonna hasten, I'm gonna hasten to his throne. Aren't you glad about it? I?
Speaker 2:heard, I heard, I heard and I know for myself.
Speaker 1:There is room at the cross. There's room at the cross, you don't have to be like everybody. There's room at the cross, you don't have to be like everybody. There's room at the cross. This joy that I have, do you have joy? This joy that I have, the world didn't give it to me. Jesus laid his hand on me. I'm glad. I'm glad my hope is in the Lord. I'm glad, I'm glad I got to pack up y'all. I'm packing up. I'm packing up Soon soon Soon.
Speaker 1:Soon, soon, soon. Are you packing up? Are you packing up? Are you packing up?
Speaker 2:Yeah, he lives.
Speaker 1:He lives. I don't care what you're going through, jesus is able. If you trust him're going through, jesus is able. If you trust him. Anybody going through something, trust in the Lord, trust in the Lord, he's able, he's able. Give the Lord a hand clap of praise. Come on, sister. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah. Give the Lord a hand clap. We're going to walk in newness of life. Come on now, come on y'all. Oh yeah, give the Lord some praise. Give the Lord some praise. Give the Lord some praise. Let us all go back back to the old old town way. Now. Let us all go back back to the old old town way. Now. Let us all go back back to the old old town way.
Speaker 1:And we'll sing and serve, and serve the Lord. Come on now. I want to go down to the river in the old.
Speaker 2:I want to go down to the river in the old. I want to go down to the river in the old town way. I wanna go down to the river in the old town way.
Speaker 1:Sing songs and songs, and buried in coming up Nobody, everybody, everybody, everybody, and we'll end up just as old. Now let us all go back to the old times. Now let us all go back to the old town place, See suns and dawn Buried in the bearing in coming up, coming up, everybody, everybody nobody fire fire.
Speaker 1:Wheel wheel kept on, kept on turning, kept on turning. Big wheel turned by faith. Little wheel, by the grace of God, Kept on turning, kept on turning. Zechariah saw a wheel in the middle of a wheel. Kept on, kept on, round by round, round by round, round by round. Fire fire, holy Ghost, holy Ghost, fire. Holy Ghost, holy Ghost, fire. Holy Ghost, fire. Holy Ghost, fire. Feel the fire, feel the fire, feel the fire. Jeremiah said just like fire Shut up in my bones, kept on, kept on Kept on Kept on. Suns and Suns and.
Speaker 2:Suns and Suns, and Coming up, coming up, coming up, coming up, everybody, everybody, kept on, kept on, kept on, kept on, kept on, shouting Everybody everybody.
Speaker 1:Everybody joy. You got joy, you got joy, you got joy, joy. Hey, hey, joy, joy. Now let us all go back Back to the old old time way. Now let us all go back Back to the old old time way. Now let us all go back Back to the old old time way. Now let us all go back.
Speaker 2:Stay in the service. Stay in the service. Get tired to stay? Stay in the service. Stay in the service of the Lord. Stay in the service. Stay in the service of the Lord. Stay in the service. I'm gonna say stay in the service of the Lord, hallelujah.
